Wrigley Field goes purple for NU football |
Introduced as the "first lady of Chicago football," Bears principal owner Virginia McCaskey set a perfect tone for Friday's announcement of the Nov. 20 Northwestern-Illinois game.
"I'm delighted to be here to participate in the new era of football in Wrigley Field," she said.
McCaskey shared a dais with Chicago sports luminaries such as Cubs executive chairman Tom Ricketts (a Nebraska football fan) and Pat Ryan, chairman of Northwestern's Board of Trustees. They sat on a stage constructed on the third-base dugout at Wrigley Field.
Purple was everywhere, from the outfits of the NU cheerleaders to the neckties worn by officials to the NU flags that hung from the foul poles.
NU athletic director Jim Phillips hopes that's a sign of things to come, given that the school will control about 30,000 of the 42,000 tickets for the game.
"This is an opportunity to showcase Northwestern, another way to bring people onto the front porch of the university," he said. "And we want to create a buzz in Chicago."
